Job Description

About QB Fabrication & Welding, Inc.

QB Fabrication & Welding, Inc. is a premier steel fabrication company specializing in structural steel for high-voltage transmission and substation infrastructure. Based in Clackamas, Oregon, we are the largest producer of steel lattice towers in the Pacific Northwest. Our fast-growing team is driven by integrity, technical precision, and a commitment to top-tier quality. As we continue to expand, we are seeking a skilled Machine Operator to join our production floor and help us deliver high-quality, precision-fabricated steel components.

Position Summary

The CNC Machine Operator plays a vital role in the execution of structural steel fabrication. Operating a range of CNC machinery (including Angle master, Plate Burner, and Beamline systems), the successful candidate will bring a strong mechanical aptitude, deep knowledge of CNC operations, and a commitment to both safety and precision. This is a hands-on position in a high-paced production environment, contributing directly to our quality output and on-time project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

1. CNC Machine Setup & Operation

  • Configure and operate CNC equipment per work orders and production drawings.
  • Operate Angle master, Plate burner, and Beamline machines for cutting, drilling, punching, and marking operations.
  • Calibrate machines and execute test runs and make necessary program edits to ensure operational accuracy and output quality

2. Material Handling & Processing

  • Load and position raw steel materials (angles, beams, plates) using overhead cranes and forklifts.
  • Verify material alignment and secure positioning before machining.
  • Unload and inspect completed parts to ensure they meet drawing specifications.

3. Quality Control & Inspection

  • Perform in-process and final inspections using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and blueprints.
  • Detect and address defects, wear issues, or programming errors.
  • Maintain production logs and inspection reports with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Anticipate foreseeable issues and take the initiative to troubleshoot or escalate as needed, e.g., when encountering warped plates, angles out of tolerance, or inconsistent cuts.

4. Maintenance & Safety

  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance, including cleaning and lubrication.
  • Promptly report significant mechanical issues and coordinate scheduled maintenance.
  • Comply with OSHA safety standards and all internal safety protocols including PPE use, lockout/tagout procedures, and machine guarding.
  • Coordinate and interface with our Millwright for mechanical troubleshooting, complex repairs, and scheduled maintenance tasks.

5. Teamwork & Communication

  • Collaborate closely with foremen, programmers, and production team to meet daily output targets.
  • Proactively report any equipment malfunctions, material shortages, or quality deviations.
  • Accurately complete production documentation and tracking system entries.
  • Demonstrate initiative by respectfully suggesting process improvements or introducing more efficient methods; we value team members who contribute ideas and help us evolve.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2-3 years of CNC operation experience in structural steel fabrication.
  • Familiarity with SigmaNEST software or similar CNC programming tools preferred/desirable, with a willingness and ability to learn nesting, editing, and tolerance-specific cutting paths.
  • Demonstrated experience with CNC machinery or comparable structural steel systems.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and navigate technical drawings and detailed fabrication specifications with confidence and accuracy.
  • Proficient in use of precision measurement tools such as calipers, micrometers, and squares.
  • Solid understanding of structural steel grades, tolerances, and machining parameters.
  • Proven commitment to safety procedures and OSHA compliance.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in a high-noise environment.
  • Valid forklift certification preferred; overhead crane operation experience is a plus.
  • Solid basic math skills; ability to calculate measurements, material lengths, angles, and tolerances accurately.
  • High school diploma or GED required; vocational or technical training is a plus.
