Instituto Familiar de la Raza, Inc. is a multi-service community health & social service agency with an emphasis on serving the Chicano/Latino/Indigenous community in San Francisco with a special focus on the diverse needs of the Mission District. Services include a wide range of mental health, HIV related services, and social services, including health promotion, education, prevention, early intervention, case management, clinical, psychological, and psychiatric intervention, as well as cultural/social and spiritual re-enforcement. The agency serves children, youth, adults & families; it has a rich history of working collaboratively with other agencies to meet the needs of the diverse Chicano/Latino/Indigenous communities, & other cultural/racial communities in San Francisco.

Job/Program Description

Director of Development and Communications is part of a dynamic leadership team charged with guiding the organization toward a sustainable future by developing and executing strategies that align organizational objectives with effective fund development, revenue-generating, and communication strategies. The position reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Board of Directors and IFR team to promote an organizational culture of philanthropy. Under the direction of the Executive Director, and as a member of IFRs Concilio Executive Team, this position is an active collaborative partner with agency leadership in visioning, leading, and implementing IFRs mission and strategic goals, plans, and objectives. This position identifies opportunities for growth, innovation, and partnerships to advance the organizations strategic objectives and enhance the organizations visibility, branding, and sustainability. This position directs and executes IFRs annual fund development plan to achieve the outlined annual revenue/fundraising goals, including the cultivation of donor relationships. This position manages communications for the agency, the position supervises and works with the Communications Specialist to develop an annual internal and external communications plan across multiple platforms to elevate the agencys visibility in the community, generate interest in the organization and its programs, and raise awareness of issues impacting IFRs clients and community. The Director of Development and Communications also manages media relations for IFR. This position is both strategic and tactical, as it is responsible for oversight and execution of IFRs annual development and communication plans. The ideal candidate is an energetic, passionate, and visionary individual with a strong commitment to addressing the needs of the Chicanx/Latinx/Indgenx community in San Francisco. They are prolific multitaskers and strategic thinkers who can effectively convey complex topics verbally and in writing. The ideal candidate will also have an interest and understanding of public health, health disparities, equity, cultural competency, and related issues impacting the Chicanx/Latinx/Indgenx communities of San Francisco.

Essential Job Duties

  • Leadership and Strategy
    • Contribute positively to organizational culture and infrastructure building, reflecting IFRs values
    • Lead development and communications for the agency and actively engage with ED, Board of Directors, Concilio senior leadership, and staff to enhance organizational visibility, promote a culture of philanthropy, and identify funding needs and resource-generating opportunities
    • Participate in strategic planning for IFR to ensure fund development and communication plans align with and are in service of evolving organizational goals
    • Lead the development, design, and implementation of IFRs development and communication plans to achieve annual revenue and communication goals to support IFRs programs, operations, and growth
    • Develop and responsibly track the annual budget for the Development and Communications team
    • Supervise the Communications Specialist, including overseeing and supporting their training, skills development, and annual reviews of supervisees
    • Network, engage, and cultivate relationships with foundation officers, current and major donors, donor prospects, elected and appointed officials, service providers, and community residents as appropriate to foster positive relationships and raise awareness of IFRs community work
    • Remain up-to-date and equipped to speak about the populations/communities served by IFR, their challenges and needs, and IFRs various supports, interventions, and programs and services from both a Communications and Development perspective
  • Fund Development
    • Implement and annually update IFRs fund development and stewardship plans, incorporating innovative strategies, industry best practices, and data-driven analysis to attract and retain donors
    • Ensure the successful coordination and execution of fundraising campaigns, appeals, events, and other development strategies, meeting all deadlines and performance benchmarks
    • Lead the strategy, implementation, and evaluation of all individual donor stewardship efforts, focusing on identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and retaining donors, while deepening their connection to IFRs mission
    • Oversee and monitor the activities of any fund development consultants to ensure alignment with organizational goals and standards
    • Manage and expand IFRs Ollin Monthly Giving Program and Major Gift Donor Program, with a focus on longterm donor engagement and revenue growth
    • Conduct prospect research to maintain a strong pipeline of local, regional, and national funding opportunities, including grants, individual giving, and institutional support
    • Oversee the agencys grant calendar, leading a collaborative grant writing process with senior leadership and program directors to produce compelling proposalstypically 1 to 2 grants per month
    • Collaborate with the leadership team to plan and execute small-scale fundraising events that align with program and organizational objectives
    • Prepare and present development dashboards and progresstogoal reports for agency senior leadership
    • Supervise the Communications Specialist in maintaining accurate donor, grant, and event records in IFRs Salesforce CRM, ensuring timely acknowledgements, reporting, and data integrity
    • Project manage the Executive Directors role in fund development by strategically guiding and prioritizing their time and engagement with donors, funders, and key opportunities
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with foundation and corporate funders to secure continued and increased support
    • Build and maintain relationships with members of the Board of Directors, supporting both collective and individual fundraising contributions; staff the Boards Fund Development Committee and manage related activities
  • Communications and Marketing
    • In collaboration with the Communications Specialist, develop and lead the implementation of the agencys annual communications and branding strategy to increase visibility and advance key communication goals
    • Supervise the Communications Specialist in the design, maintenance, and production of a range of communications materials, including the organizational website, quarterly enewsletters, social media toolkits, brochures, email campaigns, blogs, issuebased campaigns, and other digital and print collateral to support programs, events, and organizational initiatives
    • Partner with the Communications Specialist to ensure highquality design and production of external stakeholder communications, including the annual impact report
    • Oversee the execution of media strategies for events, initiatives, and organizational priorities; manage media relations; and lead the development and distribution of press releases, PSAs, OpEds, and multimedia content
    • Ensure brand consistency by supervising the Communications Specialist in reviewing all communications materials for compliance with organizational branding and policy guidelines, including appropriate use of the agency logo and other visual assets
    • Implement and oversee internal communication protocols and procedures across departments, working closely with program directors and departmental leads
    • Direct the Communications Specialist in maintaining an organized archival library of IFR photographs for use in print and digital publications, including training program staff liaisons on proper archival processes

Required Skills

  • 5-7 years of experience in a senior leadership role in nonprofit development, with a proven record of successfully increasing revenue annually
  • Extensive experience using CRM systems to strategize and execute development initiatives
  • Proven track record of successfully developing, managing, executing development plans, and development operations
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including strong editing capabilities
  • Strong project management / time management skills
  • Proven ability to develop, manage, and lead a team effectively
  • Ability to work independently and on teams to meet deadlines consistently and handle multiple tasks / projects
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel) and Google
  • Strong advocate for the Chicanx/Latinx/Indigena community with a deep understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) issues
  • Strong knowledge of contemporary issues impacting the Latino community locally and at large
  • Strong ability to speak in public, with strong interpersonal skills for relationship building
