Job Description: Controller for Non-Profit Organization

Location: San Francisco (East Bay Area), California
Employment Type: Full-Time
Salary Range: $130,000 - $175,000 annually (commensurate with experience)
Reports To: Chief Financial Officer (CFO) or Executive Director Organization

We are seeking a skilled and mission-driven Controller to join our team and support our financial operations to further our impact.

Position Summary:
The Controller will oversee the financial health of our organization, ensuring accurate and transparent financial reporting, compliance with regulations, and strategic financial planning. This role will lead the accounting team, manage budgeting processes, and provide critical financial insights to support the organization’s mission. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented, strategic thinker with a passion for non-profit work and a commitment to fostering financial sustainability. Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Management & Reporting:
    • Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and grant accounting.
    • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports.
    • Ensure compliance with GAAP, non-profit accounting standards, and federal/state regulations.
    • Present financial reports to the Board of Directors and senior leadership, providing actionable insights.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting:
    • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with program and executive leadership.
    • Develop financial forecasts and monitor budget performance, identifying variances and recommending corrective actions.
    • Support grant budgeting and reporting, ensuring proper allocation of restricted and unrestricted funds.
  • Compliance & Risk Management:
    • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including tax filings (e.g., Form 990) and audits.
    • Oversee internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and mitigate financial risks.
    • Coordinate and manage annual audits, liaising with external auditors to ensure a smooth process.
  • Team Leadership & Development:
    • Supervise and mentor a small accounting team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment.
    • Implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.
  • Strategic Financial Planning:
    • Partner with the CFO/Executive Director to develop long-term financial strategies aligned with the organization’s mission.
    • Analyze financial data to support program expansion, fundraising efforts, and operational scalability.
    • Provide guidance on cash flow management and investment strategies for reserve funds.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive financial management experience, with at least 3 years in a non-profit organization.
  • Strong knowledge of non-profit accounting principles, including fund accounting and grant management.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite) and advanced Excel skills.
  • Proven leadership skills with experience managing teams and collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities effectively.
