Under general supervision a court clerk helps maintain the offices by performing a range of administrative and clerical duties. The position requires a variety of day-to-day tasks which require strong organization abilities, attention to detail, knowledge of logistics of court proceedings and strong communication skills. The court clerk works in conjunction with court judges, lawyers, police, court officials, and other agents in the legal system to ensure that court functions are diligently carried out.
A court clerk provides administrative and clerical support to a local, state, or federal court system, and is responsible for ensuring all logistical details of court proceedings run smoothly as they are a fundamental part of the judicial system. The responsibilities of the court clerk include examining the authenticity of legal documents submitted to the court and obtaining information from litigants, witnesses, and attorneys; uphold all court files and records to ensure they stay up-to-date and accessible; ensure that all legal documents submitted adhere to the law and court procedures; handle all court's receipts: receipts for court fees, fines, and licenses while maintaining accurate record keeping. The court clerk should possess the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, to reply to inquiries from the general public, judges, court officials, lawyers, and other law enforcement agents. The court clerk must also strive to maintain a good relationship with judges, court officials, and other law enforcement agents by demonstrating strong interpersonal skills. The court clerk also demonstrates the ability to handle sensitive documents and confidential information both responsibly and discretely. The court clerk may also perform other duties such as, answering phones, send faxes, responding to emails, data entry and other clerical duties as needed.
